Background History for Kaidan RPG
Ukitake Juushirou comes from a family in the lower nobility living in Edo. His father Juusanrou is the current head of house, while his mother, Yumiko, is deceased. He has five younger brothers and two younger sisters. He was born with a weaker constitution than most, so his family often worried for him. Even though he caught cold easily and so forth, Juushirou would pride himself on keeping up with his studies, which his family tutor provided.
At the age of 13, Juushirou, as the oldest of a group of children, was left in charge of them while they were playing. Some were his brothers and sisters, and some were from other noble houses. It was summer, and the group was playing near a lake. After a child named Rukia dropped her doll in the water, Shiba Kaien, a boy of 11 years, offered to get it for her. He was unfortunately dragged under by a water spirit.
Juushirou immediately jumped in to try to save him, and though he could grab a hold of the boy, he simply wasn't strong enough due to his weakened body, and Kaien was drowned. The memory of that day still haunts him, and causes him to distrust Youkai.
It was shortly after that, when Juushirou began attending a swordsmanship academy for young nobles. He had a great desire to become stronger, so that something like that would never happen again.
He made a lot of friends there, one in particular, Kyouraku Shunsui, who he was particularly close with. However, when his mother fell ill, he returned home to help take care of his family.
The family doctor gave them some rather harsh news. Yumiko was suffering from rogai, (consumption), deemed an incurable condition at this time. She was told she must leave the city for fresh air and rest, to extend her life as long as possible.
A loving and kind son, Juushirou decided to stay by his mother's side in her final days, to take care of her needs and ease her suffering. They lived in the Ugendou, their family's summer house on a lake, for one year before his mother passed on.
Unfortunately, before her passing, Juushirou also contracted the disease.
It was no longer safe for him to return to his family, so Juushirou's father would send his son supplies (Usually with their household servants, Kiyone and Sentarou) and occasional doctor visits. Multiple treatments have been tried, one even going to far as to turn his hair white, but nothing seemed to help him be rid of the disease.
Last month, Juusanrou came to the summer house to visit his son personally, and presented him with a special scroll and instructions on how to use it. He said simply that it was a gift to the family. He told his son that he should never give up hope, and that he should continue to look for a cure himself. Perhaps one day, he could return to Edo and be with his family again.
Now, though he is still grieving the loss of his mother, he is on a quest to save his own life and return to the family that he holds so dear.
Character info
Age: 15
Height: 5'9"
Build: Thin
-Ukitake's given name (十四郎) can be spelled several ways. I chose the way I was taught to transliterate it while taking 3 years of Japanese language classes. I don't mind if you spell it another acceptable way that is comfortable for you. In roman letters these include Juushirou, Jushiro, Jyuushirou, and Jūshirō among others. It literally means 14th son, by the way.
-Ukitake's father is never named in Bleach canon, but a common "fanon" theory is that his name is Juusanrou, or 13th son, based upon Juushirou's given name. In fact, none of his family is named. I'll be making some up for the Kaidan AU, since his family is a large part of his life.
-In Bleach canon, Ukitake is sick with a disease that looks like tuberculosis. For the sake of the Kaidan AU, Young!Ukitake will have actual pulmonary tuberculosis (known as 'rogai' before 1868 in Japan) and as such will be potentially contagious to other human characters.
That being said, catching the disease from him is pretty hard to do unless your character spends lots and lots of prolonged contact with him, and even then, only about 5-10% of those infected with tuberculosis develop active disease. If you are considering having your character "catch" the disease, please contact me first so we can discuss it.
Other useful info:
- I not intending to put this character in a pairing at the current time. If you are considering playing a pairing with this character please contact me OOC first.
- My time zone is GMT + 1 (so I may be sleeping when you're ready to play!)
- American English is my first language.
- Where do I get my icon bases? Years of collecting doujinshi, that's where. :x
